Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program

Meet Your Employment & Education Goals

The FSS program is a voluntary program for those who are currently on the Housing Choice Voucher program. FSS participants receive assistance from a FSS coach to help meet barriers to employment and find the resources they need to meet their goals.

The FSS program offers an escrow account. See “Where Does the Escrow Money Come From?” below for more information. Upon successfully graduating from the program, money is distributed to the participant to be used to pursue homeownership or other goals.

  • FSS will connect you with a Certified Family Self-Sufficiency Specialist who can assist you in meeting your educational and career path goals. They can will also guide you in developing a financial fitness plan, help you build positive credit, and more.

  • When receiving rental assistance, as your income goes up your rent goes up. As a member of the FSS program, when your rent is increased due to an earned income increase, we will deposit money into an escrow account for you. You can use this money to help reach your goals!

  • You may be eligible for FSS if you have a housing choice voucher through NW MN HRA, want to work full-time, and want to invest in your family’s future. Note: Those with disabillities may request a reasonable accomodation to adjust the number of required work hours.
